A triumphant journey for Kate?
Kate braves the language barrier to find out the answer to the first conundrum in Paris.
There's nothing better than an 'in' joke amongst a group of friends.
And little that's more bemusing than someone else's 'in' joke.
I'm saying this because watching Kate on the train speeding through Northern France reminds me of a ski trip with college friends in my early twenties, when we adopted a bizarre game to while away the time on our journey.
The tax incentives in parts of France have at times favored keeping an unkempt, run-down look to the exterior of homes, regardless of their actual condition and value.
But what is one to do if you want a nice home but minimum taxes?
Simple!
Adorn your yard with a junky, rusty car... and perhaps a few chickens to lay eggs in it!
It sounds bizarre, but no sooner had one of our crew spotted the first of these scrapyard specials as we sped through France, than we were seeing rusted wrecks all over the place.
Our train back then wasn't nearly as fast as Kate's 186mph Eurostar, so to amuse ourselves on the long journey we actually held a competition for who could spot the most voitures rouillées!
Theses weren't occasional sightings either. I recall each of us counting hundreds of rusted ramshackle rides before arriving in Paris 🤯.
Meanwhile... in Paris today Kate is meeting the locals including a rather bemused hôtelière she approaches for help with today's "L'énigme de Kate" (Kate's Conundrum).
Clues lead her to a certain arch commissioned by Napoleon (yes, that Napoleon Bonaparte) which has more to it than meets the eye.
The team and I have some ever-more remarkable stops for Kate in the coming days. As a reminder, she only knows that she's got a couple more weeks to go, but has no idea of the destinations - nor the surprises to come...Enjoy.
