Day 10

Heathrow

Kate and Heathrow land at Heathrow.

So after a red-eye flight from New York, Kate and camerawonderwoman Britani have landed at Heathrow - London's most famous airport and the place for which we named our premium suitcases.

"I'm personally responsible for the name by the way– and it's not just because I was born in London!

We chose the name, but because regardless of its storied 100-year history at the heart of travel, it simply sounds like what it is - something super-upmarket.

"Heathrow – we will take afternoon tea in the East Drawing Room this afternoon please"

You get the idea."
Seymour Segnit

No this picture won't be winning any awards, but it's the first one we actually have that clearly shows Heathrow eCarry-On at it's namesake airport.

After a night flight all you really want is to get to your hotel.

Here's the moment KK learns they're off to Windsor Castle instead.

Windsor Castle has served British monarchs for over 900 years since William the Conqueror built a motte and bailey fortress on the site around 1070 AD.A motte (I have just Googled) is the raised mound on which it's all built, while the bailey is apparently the lower enclosed courtyard.

Expanded by both Henry II and III in the 12+13th centuries, Windsor evolved into the primary royal residence and largest occupied castle in the world.

Queen Victoria favoured Windsor and had the castle renovated in Gothic style. Today Windsor remains one of the official royal residences, hosting state events and private weekends away.

Windsor Castle has stood as an iconic royal stronghold for nearly a millennium, its history inextricably linked to the British monarchy.

Founder's Daily Briefing

Red-Eye Flight Tips

I've taken insanely long overnight flights several times – including the mother of red-eyes: Taiwan to New York.

15 hour flight plus a 12 hour timezone shift. 12 is the maximum jet-lag inducing shift that's possible – and it's a doozy!

Below I've summarized some notes I was once given about how to upgrade your red-eye flight, particularly for those of us who never get upgraded!

Most of these are obvious, but here's to looking after yourself and fellow captives on a loooooong flight...

  • When you don't or can't sleep others are desperately trying so speaking softly, minimizing electronics volume, etc.

  • Adjust overhead lights by angling them away from other passengers and flight crew. Better still, use a mini-personal reading light or none at all.

  • Avoid stinky foods and bare feet. Our own never seem offensive, others always do!

  • Wear eyeshades and earplugs to help cocoon yourself away!

  • Avoid bright screens before sleep, both for you and neighbors.

  • Give space in tight quarters and pardon small intrusions. And be super-careful with the back of others seats because it's no fun when someone's knocking the back of yours!

  • Remain patient and calm particularly with those who are doing neither!

Finally flight attendants aren't always perfect, but I always find a little kindness goes a very, long way when you're traveling a very long way.

Oh.. and one thing you always need on a long flight? Great cables...

Kate's Conundrum #7

"Charles the second's project boasts handsome herds of deer

And acres more of birds galore and cattle far and near

And crowns atop two lampposts near the end of three miles' march

Part way from copper sovereign to George's grandest arch."
