Why Isn’t My Apple Watch Charging?
The Apple Watch has quickly become a staple for every tech-lover and Apple loyalist. With many handy features, they’ve been a pioneer in wearable technology. However, a commonly reported problem is that an Apple Watch won’t charge. With our handy guide, you can troubleshoot your Apple Watch charging to find the solution and get you powered up again.
Try a different charger
In the first instance, you should test your Apple Watch using a different charger. This should determine whether the issue is with the charger or with the Apple Watch. You’ll then know what you need to fix.
Apple Watches come with a charging cable and so, if you’re using a third-party charger, dig out the cable that came in the box to see if you can charge your Apple Watch with this instead. If you find that it does charge, you can concentrate on fixing the charger. If it still doesn’t charge, you can focus on finding the fault with the Apple Watch.
Make sure you’re using an Apple-certified charger
If you’re using a third-party charger for your Apple Watch, you should ensure it uses only Apple’s MFi-certified charging coil, like MAGFAST Time. This will guarantee that the charger will be compatible with your Apple Watch, so you can get the best and most reliable charge. If you’re using some other brand that doesn’t use Apple’s approved technology, it could be the reason why your Apple Watch isn’t charging.
Check the charger is plugged in
You should check that the charger is plugged in properly into the outlet. If you’re using the charging cable that comes with the Apple Watch, make sure the USB end is inserted all the way into the power adaptor, and then make sure the adaptor is properly inserted into the wall. You should also check the cable for damage to ensure it hasn’t broken.
If you’re using a portable Apple Watch charger, like MAGFAST Time, you should make sure it has enough power in it. MAGFAST Time uses our LEDelicious lights so you can easily and quickly see how much battery capacity the charger has, so you’ll know when it needs a charge – although it has a battery capacity that keeps your Watch powered for up to two weeks, so you won’t have to recharge the power bank too often.
Re-center the Apple Watch on the charger
Apple Watches charge magnetically. If the magnets aren’t lined up correctly, it won’t be able to charge. Sometimes just re-centering the Apple Watch onto the charger can help to get it into the right place and get it charging again.
Clean the charger and Apple Watch
You should take a soft cloth and wipe the charger and your Apple Watch. This will remove any dust and dirt that might be preventing the magnets from connecting properly so they can charge. You shouldn’t use any cleaning solvents, as these can damage the delicate components of your Apple Watch. If you have stubborn dirt on either the Watch or the charger, you can use a damp alcohol pad or slightly damp washcloth. Wipe gently and then immediately dry with a soft cloth.
You should also ensure you’ve removed any plastic backing from your watch or charger. While these will keep your devices protected during shipping, they can disrupt the connection and prevent the watch from charging.
Restart your Apple Watch
If your watch still has some power, you should force a restart. You can do this by pressing and holding the Digital Crown and the side button for 10 seconds or until the Apple logo appears on the screen. This will force the software to reset, which can remove any glitches that are preventing the charging from taking place.
Take your Apple Watch to the Apple Store
If you’ve tried fixing the issue yourself, including using a different charger, and your Apple Watch still doesn’t charge, it might be time to call in the professionals. You can arrange to send your Apple Watch for repair through Apple’s website or book an appointment at an Apple Store. If your Apple Watch is still under warranty, you could get it repaired for free, but Apple states that the warranty doesn’t cover batteries that “wear down with normal use”. In this case, you may need to pay a fee, which is usually around $79.
