Is There a Wireless Charger for iPhone 7?
If you have an iPhone 7 and you want to use wireless charging, read on to find out everything you need to know.
Does the iPhone 7 have wireless charging?
No, the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus do not have in-built wireless charging. The iPhone 7 is the last iPhone model that does not have wireless charging. All iPhone models from the iPhone 8, including the 2nd and 3rd generation iPhone SE, which are designed as more basic models, can be charged wirelessly.
However, if you have an iPhone 7 and you’re not ready to move on to a newer model, you do have some options to enable wireless charging.
How can you wirelessly charge an iPhone 7?
To use wireless charging on an iPhone 7, you can get a wireless charging adaptor. This charger is available as a phone case or as a patch that fixes to the back of your phone. The patch or case will have a receiver that plugs into the Lightning port.
The case or patch will have wireless charging coils inside, which will receive the charge from your wireless charger. This will get passed through the Lightning port so your phone can charge wirelessly.
What are the downsides to using a wireless charging adaptor with an iPhone 7?
While using a wireless charging adaptor for your iPhone 7 lets you access the convenience of charging wirelessly, it does have some downsides. If you’re using an adaptor patch, you will still have to plug it into the Lightning port of your phone. Once it’s on, you can simply place the phone onto your wireless charging pad, but it’s not quite as fast as using a phone that has wireless charging built-in.
Another potential issue with wireless charging is that it blocks the Lightning port. This can especially be a problem if you use a wireless charging case. Because the case has to plug into the Lighting port to transfer the power, it means the port is out of action for any other use. Charging via a cable will usually always give a faster charge – so, if you ever want to benefit from a faster cabled charge, you will have to remove the entire case.
Another issue is to do with the headphone jack. The iPhone 7 is the first iPhone not to feature a headphone jack. If you use cabled headphones with your iPhone 7 that plug into the Lightning port, you will not be able to use them when the wireless charging adaptor is plugged in. Again, this can cause an issue if you’re using an adaptor case, as you’ll need to remove the case to use your headphones. However, if you use Bluetooth headphones, this won’t be a problem, as you won’t need to use the Lightning port to connect them.
