How to Back Up a Samsung Phone Easily
There are many reasons why you might want to back up your phone. Maybe you’ve just got a new phone and you want to transfer your data to it. Or perhaps you just want to make sure you have everything on your current phone backed up, so you won’t lose anything. Either way, below are the best ways to back up your Samsung phone.
Back up your Samsung phone to Samsung Cloud
Samsung Cloud is a cloud-based storage program, which will store your phone’s contacts, calls, SMS messages, apps, settings and more. However, it does not store everything on your phone – from 2021, Samsung Cloud does not provide support to back up your photos and videos, as well as documents and files you might have saved to your Samsung phone. For these files, you’ll have to use another method, which we’ll go into below.
To back up the supported data via Samsung Cloud, you need to go to Settings on your phone and then Accounts and Backup. Find Samsung Cloud and then click Back Up Data. You will then be able to choose what you want to be backed up.
Once you’ve chosen everything you want to be backed up on the Samsung Cloud, select Back Up Now. You will then need to wait while the phone backs up the data. This can take a few minutes but it’s best not to use your phone until it has finished.
Back up your Samsung files to Google Drive
As an Android user, you will already have a Google account. This makes it super simple to back up your photos, videos and other files not supported by Samsung Cloud to your Google Drive instead.
First, check that the correct Google account is connected to your phone. Go to Settings, Accounts and Google to verify the account. If it’s not right, you can log out of the wrong one and log in to your account.
Once you have your Google account connected, select the account and go to Sync. You will have the option here to choose what you want to back up to Google Drive and what you don’t want backed up. Once you have toggled on and off what you need, click the three dots menu and select Sync Now. This will back up all the chosen files.
Back up your Samsung files to Microsoft OneDrive
To back up your photos, videos and other files like documents and PDFs on Microsoft OneDrive, you’ll need a Microsoft account. Once you have one set up, you’ll be able to use it to back up your extra files.
Back up your Samsung Gallery to OneDrive
First, go to your Gallery app and select the hamburger menu. On the menu, select Settings and then Sync with OneDrive and Continue. You can then sign into your Microsoft account by clicking Connect. Once you’ve logged in, tap Accept.
Once the accounts have successfully connected, you can select Next and then Done. Before you’re finished, you may see a pop-up giving you the option to upgrade your OneDrive account. If you don’t want to do this, select Stay Basic. The basic OneDrive account has 5GB of storage, but you can always upgrade at a later date if you find you have a lot of files to store.
Once you have completed connecting your OneDrive account, your phone will automatically take you to the Gallery settings. Here you will see an option to toggle on Sync with OneDrive. Once it’s switched on, your gallery files will be backed up to your OneDrive account.
Back up your files to OneDrive
To back up your documents and other files not supported by Samsung Cloud, go to your My Files app and select Storage and then OneDrive. You’ll then be able to sign in to your Microsoft account. Tap Yes from the options and then you will be able to move your files from your phone’s storage to your OneDrive. Tap the three dots menu and then Sync to back up your files.
Transfer your data to a new phone or PC using Samsung Smart Switch
A simple way to back up your data if you want to transfer it to a new phone is to use the Samsung Smart Switch app. This also works for transferring your phone’s data to a PC or laptop.
The Smart Switch app has been designed by Samsung to make it as easy as possible to back up and restore your phone. Samsung phones will have it already installed, but it can also be downloaded for other brands to transfer data between Android, Apple and Windows devices.
To transfer the data between devices, make sure the app is downloaded on each one. Then open the Smart Switch app on each device and tap Allow to give them permission to access the data. On the device you want to send data to, select Receive Data. From the device you’re sending the data from, select Send Data.
From the device you’re sending to, you will need to select what type of device the one that’s sending the data is – Apple, Android or Windows. You will then need to select Wireless on each device for the connection option.
The devices will then search for each other and connect. Once they have successfully connected, you will be able to choose what data you want to transfer. Once you’ve chosen your files, select Transfer. You will then have to wait for the data to be transferred – the more data you have, the longer this will take. Once it’s finished, you can select Done to complete the process.
