Does Your Phone Charge Faster on Low Power Mode?
That moment when your phone hits 15% battery is when you might see a notification that tells you that, by default, your cellphone has switched some background features off and has enabled Low Power Mode in order to keep it running.
You might get another hour or so from it but with its more limited use, there is a good chance you will override that setting. This means if you keep using your phone, it could run out of power in about 20 minutes.
Luckily the ever-versatile power banks from MAGFAST mean that you can always steer clear of the dreaded 1% and quick shutdown. Thanks to the ability to charge wirelessly as well as via USB-C and Lightning cables, you won’t ever stop being connected. What happens though if you need an extra quick charge? Will keeping that low power mode running make you get back to 100% even quicker?
You may be surprised to know that it doesn’t. Studies have found that charging your iPhone on Low Power Mode makes no difference to the speed with which your phone reaches full power. Let’s find out why!
What is Low Power Mode?
Low Power Mode is a function your phone automatically switches on when its battery level gets to what some may call a critical level. You could also choose to put it into this mode yourself if you are looking to extend the life of your phone before the next charge.
It shuts down many background tasks, enabling the remaining battery power that you have to last a little longer. Common features that will be shut down would include e-mail, system updates, internet connection and any live features such as screen animations or syncing. It will also lower the screen brightness.
If you wish to activate this before it gets to the default level, you can add the Low Power Mode (LPM) feature to the control center screen so that you can activate it in an instant. To do this, just do the following:
Settings > Control Centre then scroll until you find more controls. Locate the option, Low Power Mode > Tap the green plus symbol.
This now means that, if you are concerned your battery may not last, you can simply swipe down from the top of your screen and the option will be there to activate the Low Power Mode.
Does a phone charger slower in low power mode?
Earlier we mentioned how using Low Power Mode does not relate to a faster charge – does this mean it may in fact charge slower when this mode is in operation? Well no. It doesn’t. The tech guys at makeuseof.com explain that Low Power Mode is actually a piece of software rather than hardware. This means the mode simply shuts down some features to stop the rapid drain of the battery. It won’t change how the phone charges. To test this, they set an iPhone 13 to Low Power Mode when the battery was at 30% and charged it. They then had another iPhone 13 at 30% battery and charged on regular mode. After 30 minutes of charging, both had increased by 47% in that time.
They then assessed the power drawn from the charger on both phones and neither exceeded 20w. One thing that is evident is that all iPhones will slow down their charge once they reach 50% and then slow a little more when it hits 80% and Low Power Mode automatically shuts off.
How can I charge my phone faster?
Many phone companies now offer a fast-charging option which often sees a rapid charge when plugging your phone into the mains. These endeavor to have your phone reach 50% or more within half an hour of charging. Sometimes though, a mains socket isn’t available which means that rapid boost just isn’t possible. Unless of course, you have invested wisely in a suitable portable powerbank.
